A chief foundation objective for nearly two decades has been to help ensure the strength of North Carolina’s nonprofit sector. In addition to existing as a supporting entity for The Fletcher Academy, the Foundation also supports public charities located in North Carolina or serving North Carolina residents that have as one of their purposes: • Promotion of education or the advancement or preservation of knowledge including, without limitation, the operation of a school, college, university, library or museum. •The care or support of the elderly or indigent. • The promotion, encouragement or support of musical, theatrical, visual or other artistic endeavors. • The promotion, encouragement or support of mass media or other communication arts. • The promotion, encouragement, or support of public recreation, including without limitation, the support of public parks or playgrounds. • The fostering of religious faith.

Historically, the principal grant fields have been healthcare, primarily in the local area, and education, especially independent liberal arts colleges in the Piedmont and Western regions of the state. In recent years, there has been an increase in grants to human and social service programs and organizations. A limited number of grants are made in the fields of arts and culture, historic preservation and environmental concerns. The Foundation makes grants for capital purposes, (new construction, renovation and expansion) and projects and programs, but generally not for organizational operating expenses. It does not make grants for endowments, nor does it make multi-year pledges.

In addition, the foundation also provides collective giving options. TCF provides grants and guidance to nonprofits to increase their effectiveness in our region. (4)Economic hardship assistance experienced by tobacco farmers, quota owners, their families and others as a result of decline in quota and/or production of tobacco or tobacco products. (5)Public works and industrial recruitment to local governments for upgrading utilities, transportation, and other public service infrastructure to attract new businesses or for more general economic development purposes. (6)Health and human services to improve health care and other social services needed to maintain the stability of tobacco-dependent communities. (7)Community assistance in the form of grants and/or loans to economically depressed and deteriorating tobacco-dependent communities, to be used exclusively for public purposes.
