About The NC Eugenics Project, “You Wouldn’t Expect”
Between the early 1930s and the mid 1970s, the North Carolina Eugenics Program oversaw the forced sterilization of more than 7,600 individuals. Though it began as a way to protect the severely mentally and physically disabled, by the 1950s and 60s, the program disproportionately targeted poor black women. You Wouldn’t Expect recounts the experiences of four of those victims.
